Thinking of going away? Or are you looking to relax at home and make the most of it during time off? Unless you’re one of the minority of Kiwis who work over the Christmas break, you’ll have no hassles keeping your property in tip-top shape during your days off. Here’s a short list of things to consider about your garden these holidays.
If you’re going to be away for a few weeks or more, it’s worth having your lawns mowed. Not only does it mean that on your return the lawns will be easy to get back into shape, but it also acts as a deterrent to opportunistic burglars, as your house looks lived in.
Hose water -timers are an excellent way to keep the garden green over the summer months while you’re away. Alternatively, asking a close neighbour or relative to water your garden is a simple way to protect plants from the risk of dying. Watering in the cooler part of the day will provide more efficient irrigation, otherwise much of the water is evaporated by the sun. Leaf health can also be affected when watering during extra-warm temperatures.
If you’re one of the many who use the summer holiday period to get stuck into some gardening, make sure you plan ahead to purchase any product required to finish your project. The 2018/19 summer is proving to be an excellent start for plant growth, as we’ve come off the back of ongoing rain and now the soil temperatures are heating up.
Do you outsource your garden care to a property maintenance business? Often, they will have a holiday shutdown period, so it might pay to give them a call and let them know you’d like a visit prior to Christmas. If you’re someone who likes to tackle the job yourself, then we’ve got great news – Nelson’s coming weather is looking great for gardening.
